A Message from our Band Director

OCS is my dream job! I love working with students to discover how to achieve excellence in their music creation, and it's a litter different for each student. When working with an ensemble of young musicians, the ensemble itself reflects the unity and diversity in the body of Christ. In 1 Corinthians, chapter 12, Paul describes the varieties of gifts and roles that God puts together to make up His church. When I look at our OCS Bands, I see and hear the varied voices that come together to create a new and beautiful thing. It takes every single instrument to have a band, and each must do their job to the best of their ability. Every instrument has its own, individual, beautiful sound, but what happens when they work together? It is the coolest thing and I am so blessed to work on musical excellence in order to glorify our creative, amazing God!

Band Opportunities by Grade

A first-time band experience for students who have the choice between flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and percussion. Students learn the basics of producing a pleasing sound as well as instruction in reading music. The 6th Grade Band at Oakland Christian performs twice in the school year in a casual “informance” setting for parents.

*Students are strongly encouraged to also take private lessons, but this is not required.

The Middle School Band at Oakland Christian is made up of 7th and 8th-grade students who have one or two years of experience playing their band instruments. Students work out of a method book for sequential instruction while also working on full band compositions and arrangements for performances. The Middle School Band is involved in 4 concerts per school year, MSBOA Festival, and Solo & Ensemble.

*Students are strongly encouraged to also take private lessons, but this is not required.

Symphony Band is a concert band class for students in grades 9-12. Students learn advanced skills that enable this ensemble to perform in 4 concerts per year, MSBOA Festival, and Solo & Ensemble.
