Oakland Christian School’s Ed Mehlberg inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches' Association (MHSCA) Hall of Fame

OCS is pleased to announce Ed Mehlberg was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches' Association (MHSCA) Hall of Fame on Sunday, September 17. With family members, friends, and OCS faculty members in the audience, Coach Mehlberg was recognized for his 44-year career, 900+ basketball victories, and 90 seasons of varsity coaching in multiple sports.

Mehlberg’s tenure as a coach at OCS has included many different positions. He served 31 years as boys’ basketball coach, 22 years as girls’ basketball coach, and he also coached track, cross country, baseball, and softball.  While coaching, he led OCS to 78 trophies, including 40 MIAC wins, 28 district wins, 9 regional wins, and two state championships, (Ron Landry, 1982 track, and the 1992 girls’ basketball team). With a combined boys and girls basketball record of 920 wins -320 losses, he was inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Fame in 1998.

However, Mehlberg looks beyond his successful record.  As he stated in his acceptance speech at the MHSCA Hall of Fame induction, "it is a privilege to serve in God's calling, a privilege to serve in a faith-based school, a privilege to impact children, a privilege to serve alongside like-minded colleagues, and a privilege to be called Coach."

Mehlberg then finished his acceptance speech by spreading the Gospel through a quote from legendary coach John Wooden,  “There is only one kind of a life that truly wins, and that is the one that places faith in the hands of the Savior.  Until that is done, we are on an aimless course that runs in circles and goes nowhere.  Material possessions, winning scores, and great reputations are meaningless in the eyes of the Lord, because He knows what we really are and that is all that matters.”

After graduating from Taylor University in 1973, Mehlberg joined the OCS staff as band director and substitute teacher.   In the 1974 school year he returned to teach high school, continue as band director, and coach the school’s only athletic team, boys’ basketball.  During his 39 years as athletic director, Mehlberg continued to grow the athletic department, which now offers 36 different sports here at OCS
Outside of athletics, Coach Mehlberg has also helped solidify traditions here at OCS including the Wall of Fame, the Wall of Faith, Alumni Night, and Homecoming.

As Roy Townsend, Secondary Principal states, “Much credit must be given to Coach Mehlberg for creating the foundation and culture of OCS Athletics.  Decades of alumni can speak to Coach Mehlberg’s influence in their lives.  Over 900 basketball wins, but more importantly thousands of lives touched through coaching & teaching.

Well done, Coach Mehlberg, well done!”
