2024 Mission Trip to Juan Tomás, República Dominicana

June 27, 2024
By Laura Frasa, Secondary Spanish Teacher and Lead Teacher for the Dominican Republic Mission Trip

UNDIVIDED

Both professionally and personally, words have always spoken deeply to me. When I saw how impactful “S.H.IN.E (Seeing Him in Everything)” became during and after last year’s mission trip, I knew that I needed to pay attention to what God laid on my heart for this year. Very quickly after our return in 2023, I sensed that “Undivided” was what He wanted me to focus on in preparation for a new mission. This word encourages a “vertical focus” (our relationship with God), as well as a “horizontal focus” (our relationships within the team and with the Dominicans themselves). From these focal points, each day’s morning devotional then centered around God’s invitation through the book of James to live as “whole” rather than “double-minded” or, in the Greek, “two-souled.” Going into this trip, none of us truly knew how this theme would play out-- in either aspect of the word-- but by the end, we clearly saw how God drew us closer to each other, to the Dominican community, and to Himself. As a result, we have each been impacted in such a way that has caused us to see the world differently than we did before we left, and so now we long to bring a measure of what we experienced there back to our lives here.

Cards, Kids, & Community

On the day we arrived, those who had traveled to the Dominican in the past were met with a familiar initiation: card games with any number of people, ball games at all hours, and kid-carrying that seemed constant. And yet, this is why our journey always starts so early (with a 6am flight!) -- because it allows us to get to the DR in the afternoon and start building relationships as soon as we step foot on campus. This is therefore the third year in a row where we have seen how the way we start has so much impact upon our focus for the rest of our time there. This mission is not primarily about the work we do but, more importantly, about the relationships that we form along the way.

Painting, Painting, & More Painting!

This year there were a lot of “little needs” that we were able to meet: laying baseboards in the church, fixing fences & gutters, clearing out rock, cleaning out sheds & other “cluttered areas”, disassembling school desks for repair, etc. However, the bulk of our work time was spent painting. We painted four houses in the village, a wall in the church, the wall at the street leading into the church area, as well as the wall at the street outside of the founder’s house and of the school, the walls surrounding the basketball court, around the 3rd & 4th grade rooms, around the dining hall, and all of the benches in the main playfield. It was gratifying to see how this brightened up the campus in time for their high school graduation on June 21st, but more importantly, some of our best memories and greatest connections were formed while holding a brush or a roller.

Pintando Corazones (Painting Hearts)

This year, the local church allowed us to take a ministry that they usually plan for outside of their village and bring it home. Pintando Corazones / Painting Hearts is a ministry whose goal is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through painting projects, provision of food, VBS, worship, and assistance to those in need. Thanks to the donations of Liberty General Baptist (Mr. Frantz’s church) towards this ministry, we were able to deliver 5 huge grocery bags to houses in the village-- and then pray over those houses and their inhabitants. How huge were these bags? It took two guys to carry each one, and still, the task was tiring. It was a blessing to be able to serve the community in such a way, and according to the motto of this ministry: UNA NACIÓN. UNA MISIÓN. UN CORAZÓN. ONE NATION. ONE MISSION. ONE HEART.

Sharing Languages

On four separate occasions, one on the last day of school in two different high school English classes, and then for three distinct “extracurricular” English classes offered on campus after school was already out for the summer, several of us had the opportunity to help students practice their skills in both large and small group settings. It ended up being a lot of fun overall, as we continued to “build bridges” and share laughs together.

Sharing Celebrations

Because of when OCS let out this year, and how that coincided with Manantial de Vida’s year end, this is the first time that we were on campus for the students’ last day of school. While it was sad to wake up on our last two days in Juan Tomás and walk to the dining hall in silence-- without the “hustle and bustle” of school children, hearing their joyful greetings, seeing their smiling faces, and receiving their heartfelt hugs-- none of us will forget being able to celebrate the last day of school with the lower elementary students. They were constantly dancing, singing, and asking for piggy-back rides. And while everyone was extremely hot and tired, we just couldn’t say “no” to these precious kids. Pictures do not do this day justice, but when all was said and done, it was so satisfying to know that we gave our all on the last day that we would see our little friends.

Worshiping Together

Latin American cultures are always very open to having visitors use their talents during church services. While we didn’t bring music this year, like we have in the past two years, we did bring a pastor-- Mr. Frantz! I had asked him months ago if he would like to preach while we are down there (if you know Mr. Frantz, there was no real need to ask!)-- and not only did he get to preach for the Wednesday night service, but once we were there, he was asked to also preach for the youth service on Saturday night. Speaking of which, students had already learned to coin the phrase “Dominican Time”, which came in handy when the 7pm youth service didn’t start until 8pm. However, neither the waiting nor the later night affected the energy of the worship that book-ended Mr. Frantz’s message. I still have “Somos el pueblo de Dios” running through my head, as well as “Dios ha sido bueno” from the elementary kids, which seems appropriate because, no matter the color of our skin or the language that we speak, “We are [all] God’s people”, and “God has been good” -- so so good -- to all of us.

Sharing God’s Faithfulness

Our last night together is always a “night of reflection”-- a time to celebrate how we have seen God work… not so much through us physically as much as in us spiritually and around us relationally. While we didn’t necessarily understand during our monthly meetings and social gatherings throughout the year how this team would function together once we were in the Dominican, by that last night, we clearly knew that God put this team together just as He wanted it. Some of us didn’t know each other at all-- or very little-- before we left, but the ways in which we were able to see God in each other were one of the best parts of this journey. Not only that, but the trust that some of the Dominicans honored us with by sharing their life’s stories-- and even a highly festive birthday party!-- only further cemented the reality that although we always seek to make a difference in the lives of others while we are on mission, it’s really our lives that seem the most impacted and blessed for having cross paths with those that don’t look like or sound like us. For that reason, we are confident that all we have experienced will continue to shape us in the weeks, months, and years ahead. To God be the glory!

Meet Jared Frantz

October 20, 2023
By Oakland Christian School

Join us in welcoming Jarred Frantz, our new 9th and 10th grade Bible teacher, to Oakland Christian School!

Jarred comes to us with a passion for deepening our students' connection with God. He's leading the way for our 9th graders through "The New City Catechism," a series of thought-provoking questions that will help students grow closer to God and understand their faith on a deeper level.

For our 10th graders, Jarred is guiding them through "The Triumph of Christ," a comprehensive study of the entire Bible with a focus on the book of Acts and Paul's epistles.

Jarred's favorite Bible verse, John 3:30, reflects his dedication to serving God with humility: "He must become greater; I must become less."

Let's give Jarred Frantz a warm Oakland Christian School welcome and support him as he helps our students grow in their understanding of the Lord, the scripture, and the world around them It's going to be an incredible year of growth and discovery!

What do you love about Oakland Christian?

There are so many reasons we love Oakland Christian. When our daughter walks through the doors each morning, she is greeted by name with a warm, friendly smile by the staff. We have experienced that not only does her teacher love her and is invested in her growth, but the entire staff is just as invested in her well-being throughout each day. We couldn't dream of a more nurturing, loving environment for our daughter to spend her school days when she is away from us. When your child says the best part of her days is when she gets to be at school, you know you're at a pretty special place.

Why choose Oakland Christian?

We chose Oakland Christian for smaller class sizes and a Christian education that extends beyond just what we do in our home. We love the values they teach of faith and the encouraging growth and development in both academics and spirituality. We love that each child is celebrated, loved, and learning to live righteously, serving God's Kingdom in a school setting.

How has your child's faith grown at Oakland Christian?

This is only our daughter's second year at OCS, and while she is still very young, we have seen her faith grow deeper. Her constant requests for worship music, reading bible passages, and wanting to learn more about God are more noticeable.  However, the well-thought-out questions about God and leaning into God more when having a hard day are noticeable. Since her faith life is extended from home to school, we feel that God is at the forefront of her mind more. We love that she has faithful teachers whom she can talk to with questions too. We look forward to watching her relationship grow deeper in Christ as she grows older and continues her education at OCS.

Describe Oakland Christian in one word.

Why consider enrolling at Oakland Christian School?

If anyone is considering enrolling their children, I would advise them to come and visit. When you walk through the front door, you will see what a warm, friendly environment OCS provides. (And the treehouse in the library is pretty cool too!) We attended an Open House and were hooked immediately. We feel so grateful to have found OCS for our youngest.

What do you love about Oakland Christian?

We love the feeling we get when walking through the school doors in the morning: a feeling of connectedness between school staff and their students/families. We love the small class sizes where teachers can focus on students' individual needs. We love that our children are learning in a God-focused environment.

Why choose Oakland Christian?

We chose OC for multiple reasons, but specifically for a Christ-centered education and for the exceptional Spanish Immersion program which both of our children at OC attend. OC seemed like the perfect fit for our family, and it has definitely proven to be the right decision thus far!

How has your child's faith grown at Oakland Christian?

Our children initiate discussions about God (awesome!) and recite Bible verses without being prompted. They make connections between Bible stories and their own lives and are applying what they are learning in school to their own experiences as they learn more about Jesus.

2023 Mission Trip to Juan Tomás, República Dominicana

June 21, 2023
By Laura Frasa, Secondary Spanish Teacher, and lead teacher for the Dominican Republic missions trip

S.H.IN.E  “Seeing Him IN Everything”

S.H.IN.E was Oakland Christian’s theme for the 2014-15 school year, and through my 10 years of teaching at this school, it is one of the themes that most stick out in my mind. This message was weighing heavily on my heart and mind after we returned from our last trip to the Dominican, and so I began to consider that this might be the theme for the 2023 trip. Last year our team discussed together what we wanted the theme to be, and so therefore I was slightly uneasy about simply telling them when we came back to school that “S.H.IN.E” would be our new theme. However, because I felt that God must have laid it on my heart for a reason, I wanted to obediently embrace this message. The team agreed that it was a great focus for the Dominican Trip in 2023, and so I proceeded with this motivation in mind. Slowly but surely, in combination with other things that God had been already laying on my heart this past year, it began to make more sense.

But little did I know when 11 students and 2 teachers embarked on this journey just how much the challenge to S.H.IN.E would impact us-- both as a team and individually.

Laying Sidewalks & Floors

On our first day of work, those who had traveled to the Dominican last year were met with a familiar task: developing a pit to mix cement and then laying it down through what felt like very primitive tactics. However, practicing the technique in a “low-stakes” situation (rebuilding part of a sidewalk) was great preparation for what we would experience several days later-- the grueling process of laying the foundation for the entire floor of a house. And yet it is that “familiarity” that would continue to fuel the team-- both in our work and in our relationships throughout the week.

Building a Garden

The next days were spent creating a community garden-- literally from the ground up. The seeds had already been purchased by the Dominicans, and some of them were planted in order to start the germination process, but then our goal was to cut wood and sheet metal, haul it to the garden site, build boxes to create “raised beds”, gather large rocks to line the beds with, and then fill those beds with a mixture of dirt and goat dung.  Yes, there was a small group of men from our team who gathered the waste from the goat farm located next to the school and sat in the truck that transported it to the site. Those are memories that none of them will soon forget! Our goal was to fully make 6 boxes; however, due to torrential downpours during a crucial day to finish the work on the garden, we only made 2. Gratefully, the materials are already cut for the other 4.

Creating Community

The most important aspect of our trip was being able to continue to develop relationships with the Dominican people. From the very beginning when we first stepped foot onto the campus-- and a group of “familiar girls” met me, called me by name, and welcomed me back to “my family”-- the phrase that kept going through my mind was “how beautiful it is to know and to be known.” Since last year was the first annual Dominican Mission Trip, it was full of unknowns and uncertainties. To then approach this year with familiarity instead of apprehension-- and to be able to know people by face and call them by name-- was a true blessing. As with last year, we arrived in the DR early enough to start building/rebuilding those relationships right away: playing games, talking, singing, and laughing.  Two of our girls then chose to teach English for a couple of days in the 1st - 3rd-grade classrooms, we all had the opportunity to interact with MANY children, and a group of us were invited to visit the home of one of the girls that OCS sponsors. Per usual, there was “never nothing going on” while we were there, which provided the perfect opportunity to continue to live in community and to do life together.

Worshiping Together

Being part of the community meant that we were able to participate in a special communion service the first night that we were there, as well as a unique prayer service the following Wednesday.  Latin American cultures are also very open to having visitors use their talents during church services, so right away one of our members was accompanying worship on the keyboard. Then for the Sunday morning worship, the service opened with us singing two songs-- in a mixture of Spanish and English-- with accompaniment on the keys, the cajón, and the guitar. It was truly rewarding to be able to offer a sacrifice of praise in another country-- and in their language.

Working As One

Sometimes while on a mission trip, there is a temptation to complain that there are “too many workers and not enough work.” However, Richard, our leader in the Dominican, said it perfectly the last night we were there: “You have learned what this mission is all about.  It is not about completing projects; it’s about forming relationships.”  Whatever project we embarked upon, we were always silently asking ourselves, “Who is that person? How is that person related? Do they live in the village? Who are these kids’ parents? WHERE are these kids’ parents?!?” Indeed, we have seen over and over again that when you endeavor to do something-- in work or in play-- you do it together. It was, therefore, a great last day of work when we went back to the village, to the house where we had laid the cement floor, and with a great conglomeration of people were able to paint the inside and outside of that house-- and also level out the front yard. The lady who lives in the house was in such desperate need-- as evidenced by the closet of a bathroom, guarded only by a makeshift curtain-- that she reached out to Richard’s church… and “God’s church”, indeed, came together as one. We also became one this year in a less expected situation… practicing the “Latin American Way” of seeing how many people you can cram into one vehicle. It may have been uncomfortable-- and scary for some-- but these, too, are unforgettable memories.

Working As Needed

Along with “too many workers”, sometimes we are tempted to question the effectiveness of our mission. Again, it’s not about “checking boxes” or “accomplishing monumental tasks.” Sometimes it’s about seeing Him in the little things… in more isolated moments. These include the times when we emptied out and reorganized a huge (mess of a) tool shed, helped with folding laundry, ministered to those on the ball field before playing with them and fixed and cleaned gutters. This last task is particularly notable, considering that three of our team members got stuck on the roof during one particular torrential downpour. The work was desperately needed, but it was interrupted in a rather stark way. We praise God for our safety!

Embracing Interruptions

At first, the interruption by the continual downpours was frustrating, especially when it seemed like that could be the story for the rest of our trip-- days and days of continual rain. However, when the work was called off for that day, and only that day, what transpired ended up being a memory that no one will ever forget: Embracing the Rain. The Dominicans had not seen rain in a while, and so they were actually very happy to watch it shower down… which also provided the opportunity for another Latin American Tradition: the Environmental Slip-n-Slide. Team members, even the more serious ones among us, had the opportunity to become kids again for the afternoon--and the joy was undeniable.

Seeing Him IN Everything

Much like the orchestration of each day on the trip, we know that God put this team together just as He wanted it. Some of us didn’t know each other at all-- or very little-- before we left, but the ways in which we were able to see God in each other were one of the best parts of this journey. Little did we know a year ago how it would all unfold, nor just how much reminding ourselves and each other to “See Him in Everything” would impact us personally and corporately. For that reason, we are confident that all we have experienced will continue to shape us in the weeks, months, and years ahead. To God be the glory!

How YOU Can Continue to Support This Mission

Not only did we donate nearly $1,500 in supplies to the school Manantial de Vida, but we also brought a countless amount of used sporting equipment: 16 bats, 9 gloves, 7 volleyballs, 3 basketballs, 2 footballs, 1 baseball helmet, 2 baseball/softball bags, and 2 ball pumps. If you donated money or equipment this year, please know that we are so grateful. Before next year’s trip, we will start promoting such needs again; however, in the meantime, would you consider sponsoring a child’s education at Manantial de Vida?

To date, Oakland Christian School is sponsoring two girls (an incoming 2nd grader and a 7th grader), allowing them to enjoy a Christian education for a full year. Between last year’s team and this year’s, there are also five additional children being supported through ongoing sponsorships.  It is our hope and prayer that in the future, we will sponsor even more children through the support of our OCS community.  For only $32 a month, you can help to offset the cost of a Christian education for a child in Juan Tomás. https://partnersnchrist.reachapp.co/

Bringing Community Home

Finally, not only did we see our love of the Dominicans and their culture flourish, but we also saw our care for and appreciation of one another grow. It is now our prayer that we will take all that we experienced—in particular, the sense of community—and use it to bring unity to Oakland Christian School in the fall. We deeply desire for our school to be a genuinely safe place for all students and staff to unabashedly walk out their unique, God-given purpose for God’s glory.

By Oakland Christian School

Pictured here, Theresa Doan, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Genisys Credit Union, smiles for the camera with the Oakland Christian School Robotics team, their VEX robots, and team leader Mr. Greg Favaro. Genisys, which sponsors 12 robotics teams, recently paid a visit to learn more about robotics at OCS because they recognize the importance of forming community ties.

“We are excited to expand our commitment to include the OCS robotics team. I was so impressed with their presentation. Our sponsorship will continue to promote key skills of leadership, communication, and team collaboration,” says Theresa.

The team is also sponsored by Gestamp, an international group dedicated to the design, development, and manufacturing of metal automotive components.

Robotics Program Details

OCS Robotics, now in its sixth year, has achieved an impressive 12 tournament champion titles. During the past three years, the team participated at the state level, and for the last 2 years—world! They practice year-round with 20 students in grades 7 – 12.

Staying competitive requires funding to attend tournaments, and purchase design elements, VEX metals, and robot controllers in order to adapt to new games every year.

“Robotics encourages students to find solutions and develop critical thinking skills. STEM principles prepare students to become innovators,” says high school senior Avery Almy, during the team’s recent presentation.

Team Qualifies for State Championship

In other recent news, the OCS Robotics team composed of seniors received an Excellence Award at a tournament held at Kettering University. There they competed against 25 teams representing six different schools. This award qualifies OCS to compete at the State Championship at Kettering on February 26, 2023. Additionally, the team was ranked at the top for their engineering notebook rubric, exhibited a high-quality team interview, and displayed positive team conduct, good sportsmanship, and professionalism.

Baker College Education Advocate Nomination

Celebrations continue with the recent news that Oakland Christian School was just nominated, thanks to Robotics, for the Baker College Education Advocate Award in the Gold and Silver Awards hosted by the Auburn Hills Chamber. This award will be presented to the company with the most progressive education initiatives.

Thank you to Rochester Media and Walker News of Rochester Hills for sharing our story!

What do you love about Oakland Christian?

The relationships our children have developed with their teachers, in elementary, middle school, and high school. They truly are known as individuals and cared for as a "whole" person in every sense of the word, not just solely focused on academics.

Why choose Oakland Christian?

First and foremost we chose Oakland Christian for the faith fit our family was looking for. Our oldest came as a Freshman and the AP Capstone Diploma track was of particular interest with the many AP course selections.  Another child was specifically drawn to OCS for praise and worship band opportunities and smaller class sizes. We wanted a smaller, Christian environment without giving up academic excellence.

How has your child's faith grown at Oakland Christian?

All three of our children have grown in their faith tremendously. While they are involved in church programs, the partnering with teachers and home has provided growth we may not have seen otherwise. Having bible class as a core class each day, bible studies, and overall Teaching for Transformation model in all subject areas has aided in their faith journey. In addition, relationships with teachers has proved to be a source of personal connection for them to turn to with faith questions regardless of the subject being taught.

The McFarland Family

August 19, 2022
By Oakland Christian School

What do you love about Oakland Christian?

We love that our children are being/have been taught in an environment that matches what we provide them with at home.

Why choose Oakland Christian?

We chose OCS (way back in 2007!) for the Christian values and small class sizes that allowed more individual & personal instruction. We continue to choose OCS for those same reasons as well as for the relationships we have made while there.

How has your child's faith grown at Oakland Christian?

Since our kids have all been at OCS since a very young age, we haven't noticed any significant leaps or bounds in their faith, but we do know that the continual feeding has given them a strong foundation and we can't wait to see how God shapes them as they take responsibility for their own faith in adulthood.

Describe Oakland Christian in one word.

Home.

Why consider enrolling at Oakland Christian School?

Come take a look and fall in love with the OCS family. Don't be turned away by the cost. If God wants you there, He WILL provide! I never thought we'd be able to put 1 kiddo through Christian schooling, but here we are with 2 (lifer) graduates and a 3rd one making his way through. God cares about the desires of our hearts.

Introducing our 2022-2023 Spiritual Theme

August 06, 2022
By Oakland Christian School

Based on Colossians 3:16-17, the spiritual theme at Oakland Christian for the 22/23 school year is, “Dwell Richly.” The apostle Paul wrote this letter around A.D. 60 to the church at Colossae while serving his first prison sentence in Rome. Here is the text from the ESV translation (emphasis ours):

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." - Colossians 3:16-17

"Dwell" in the Greek language is best translated as, “to live in,” “to be at home,” or “to inhabit.”

Paul then is admonishing those in Colossae to emphasize that the Word of God is to live in them, to have a home in their hearts, and to inhabit their minds.

At first glance, these verses from Colossians 3:16-17 seem quite simple to understand, but upon closer examination, we can see their true challenge come to light. We find this Greek translation of “dwell” ἐνοικείτω (ENOI-KEE-TOE) in a few additional places in the New Testament.

First, Romans 8 uses it to describe the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit that dwelled in Jesus, that raised him from the dead, dwells in the believer.

Second, 2 Corinthians 6:16 also uses "dwell". It references an Old Testament scripture from Exodus 29 stating that The Lord God will dwell among His people.

We can’t wait to explore this theme together as a school community!

2022 Mission Trip to Juan Tomás, República Dominicana

July 01, 2022
By Oakland Christian School

“This mission trip to the Dominican Republic can be described in so many different ways it’s hard to think of where to begin. God worked in so many incredible ways this trip and changed my heart to understand the importance of community. Right off the bat, we saw how much we take for granted at home in America, yet despite having little, the people of the Dominican had such joy, hospitality, and community. These sweet kids showed nothing but love despite us being complete strangers. The teens we lived with immediately became our friends. And within our own group, I was able to see how important it is to have community with others and to support and encourage one another in all that we do—no matter how hot it got or how hard the work became. This trip certainly had its highs and lows, but God remained faithful through it all. I am beyond grateful for this experience, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Serving God and loving on others is so incredibly important and being a part of this trip has been a blessing!” -Abby Meyer, 12th Grade

Sometimes God allows one door to close so that another may be opened... and such is the story of how we were able to embark upon our very first mission trip to the Dominican Republic. When the Europe trip was canceled in March of 2020, it gave me the opportunity to pivot and follow my passion—coming alongside God’s people in Latin America. What an absolute blessing it was to then see students understand firsthand what impacted my life in profound ways for the first time some 28 years ago—a depth of joy, passion, hospitality, and community that is the essence of the Latin American people.

Helping to Build a Home

On our first day of work, we formed a long assembly line and passed endless buckets of concrete in order to start building a home, a “primitive act” that seemed to both set the tone for the week and symbolically represent the nature of this team.

Working with the Children

After day one, we interacted with and received hugs from more kids than most on our team have probably encountered in a lifetime. We employed more paint strokes than even Daniel LaRusso (“I’m going to be painting in my sleep—I just know it!” -Aaron Frasa). Working with children both inside and outside of the classroom—we tore down and built walls in deteriorating classrooms, sanded more walls and iron bars than one thought humanly possible, connected with “new children” in a refuge home for girls, and played endless games of soccer, volleyball, and cards every day with the locals (who never seemed to know where “Uno” wandered off to).

A Bonding Experience

Through it all, we sensed that we were all part of one family instead of two cultures maintaining their distinctiveness. From the moment we arrived and were met with smiles and help to put up our mosquito nets—we bonded. Spanish students bridged the gap by practicing the language they have acquired, but even non-Spanish students made precious heart connections through other means... but none more rambunctious than Mr. McCarty frequently yelling, “¡Dios es bueno!” Yes, there are many stories to share, and quite a few inside jokes to keep to ourselves, but these are all part of creating memories that we will forever carry with us.

Ridiculous Faith

We know that God went before us, paving the way and allowing us to all stay healthy and safe the entire time. We also need to give credit to Walkiri, Lucenis, and Lina—three wonderful ladies that served us with incredible food, timely cleaning, and labor-intensive laundry services all week. We are also confident that our daily small group devotionals, focusing on “ridiculous faith”, helped us to keep our eyes focused on our team’s personal mission—Hearts on Fire: For God and For Others.

Ongoing Support Through Sponsorship

Not only did we donate over $500 in supplies to the school Manantial de Vida, but we also still had $1500 left to determine how God wanted us to use it while we were there. As the week progressed, so did our love for the Dominicans and their culture grow, and therefore after hearing only a couple of testimonies, we knew what we wanted to do with the money. To date, Oakland Christian School is sponsoring two girls (an elementary student and a high schooler), allowing them to enjoy a Christian education for a full year. Three students and one staff member also felt led to sponsor children, and so they and/or their families are able to provide these with a Christian education as well. These five children will be ongoing sponsorships… and in the future, we hope to sponsor even more children through the support of our OCS community.

A Sense of Community

Finally, not only did we see our love of the Dominicans grow, but we also saw our care for and support of one another flourish. It is now our prayer that we will take all that we experienced—in particular, the sense of community—and use it to bring unity to Oakland Christian School in the fall in the name of Jesus and for His glory. After all, what happened in the Dominican can’t stay there!

Art and Writing Competition Winners

June 14, 2022
By Oakland Christian School

Congratulations to Oakland Christian School Art students who had work selected by The Zekelman Holocaust Center to win the Kappy Anne Frank and Elie Wiesel Night Art & Writing Competition. This competition seeks to educate students about the Holocaust, engage them through Anne Frank and Elie Wiesel’s profound stories, and empower them to move from thought to action using creative expression. Congratulations to Lillian Scheu, Katie Austin, and Avery Miller!

“Remembering the Holocaust means choosing to take a stand against bias, hatred, and violence. It means standing up for what is right and good. By using their voices through art and writing, students share their messages in a creative and meaningful way. Art and writing have the power to touch people's hearts and minds. By using your voice and speaking about the Holocaust, you can help ensure that such suffering never happens again. That is the Power of Your Voice. What lesson from the Holocaust will you impart with the power of your voice? How will you use your voice—through your art or writing—to impart your message about the Holocaust?” -The Zekelman Holocaust Center

"Many images and words moved me personally this evening. It’s good that children today study and know about past atrocities. May the wrongs of that time in history never occur again." -Jane Hunter

A Voice of Hope,  Avery Miller, 11th Grade

Statement of Purpose

“This piece portrays four Jewish boys with little hope left, but one, still has some to remain, and with it he not only calls upon the Lord for strength and protection but also for future generations to not forget. They are to not forget the turmoil, strife, and pain, but rather look to the Lord for their ultimate deliverance in all times of trials. As Psalms 91:1-15 fills the background, it shows that with the power of their voice, calling upon the Lord, He will answer them. As the light grows stronger around the boy who spoke out, it shows how with his voice he can gain strength, and hope, and become a sign of remembrance for those who will later look upon this devastating event. From here, we are called to be further voices, in order to not forget and to not become accomplices in disregarding the real horrification that took place.” -Avery Miller

Lost Childhood, Lilly Scheu, 11th Grade

Statement of Purpose

"How was it possible that men, women, and children were being burned and that the world kept silent?” (Elie Wiesel). This quote demonstrates the power of voices. People could have used their voices during the Holocaust to stop the horrors that went on. Today we can use our voices to honor and speak for those who were lost. My art represents the children that were killed during World War II. The names of kids whose voices were taken from them through concentration camps are written throughout the form of the piece to show remembrance of their lives. The drawing shows the near-death experience that no children should have to go through. I hope that my piece shows how we can use our artistic voices to remember the lives of those lost." - Lilly Scheu

Hope Takes Flight, Katie Austin, 12th Grade

Statement of Purpose

"During the Holocaust, there was little to no hope for the Jewish community; however, the few that had hope in the worst situations could handle it the best. Some would even use their voice as a powerful tool to spread hope against the Nazis and their corrupt regime. The Jewish girl depicted in the image utilizes the power of her voice by shouting out hope, as symbolized by the dove, into the sky. The dove chases away the ravens representing corruption, death, and destruction. As the dove spreads its wings, it becomes more prominent than the other birds. Though darkness may seem overwhelming in times of despair, hope cuts a clear path through the shadows and becomes a beacon of light. By utilizing our voice and spreading hope, we can chase off the darkness that may lurk in our lives today and even bring about change." - Katie Austin

2022 Excellence in Education Awards

April 26, 2022
By Oakland Christian School

In participation with the Auburn Hills Chamber of Commerce, we were thrilled to nominate students, Matthew Douglas (5th grade), Joesey DeLong (8th grade), and Zanaria Ware (12th grade) for the 2022 Excellence in Education Awards.

Excellence in Education celebrates qualities of excellence within students and their educators. Students are selected based on character, community service, academics, and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Excellence in Education Award Winners

As part of the program, the selected students name a teacher who has made a significant impact in their lives. Mrs. Hosmer was nominated by Matthew Douglas, Mrs. Gross was nominated by Joesey Delong, and Mrs. Hall was nominated by Zanaria Ware.

In addition to the Excellence in Education Award that Zanaria received, she also was awarded the Forvia Future Leader Scholarship. The following testimonies were submitted by our award winners about their significant-impact educators.

"I have attended Oakland Christian School since Kindergarten. Mrs. Hosmer was my fourth-grade teacher. She is nice and was fun to have as a teacher. Mrs. Hosmer created games for us to play to help us learn our subjects. My favorite game was “Math Basketball.” We also did several different projects during the year. One of my favorite projects was “The Oregon Trail” in Social Studies. She helped us learn about the hardships that the people experienced and how it is important to prepare for things in life. Mrs. Hosmer is also always very kind. She started a Friendship Club to teach us about being kind to others. I am glad I have the chance to recognize her as one of my favorite teachers." - Matthew Douglas

"The teacher that has helped me be where I am today is Mrs. Gross. I have always struggled a little with math and did not have a lot of courage trying to work it out by myself. Mrs. Gross started tutoring me in 6th grade. She always would encourage me and build me up even when I doubted myself. Whenever I had a homework problem, math test, or an exam she would always be there to help me and build up my strength and confidence. I am so very thankful and blessed that I have had the privilege of Mrs. Gross being my teacher." -Joesey DeLong

"I nominated Mrs. Hall as I have been extremely grateful to have her in my life. Although she never taught me in a class she has gone above and beyond to support me as I transitioned from the International Technology Academy. She was a constant encouragement, pushed me not to fall behind, and celebrated with me my successes. She also filled in the parental gaps that have been missing in my life. When my grandma passed away, she organized a Christmas surprise of gifts from Oakland Christian school teachers and staff. For that simple act of kindness and so many others, I am very grateful." -Zanaria Ware

Congratulations to both students and teachers!

Jason, Patricia, Keira (6th grade), Keigan (3rd grade)

We initially heard about OCS through friends.  We love that it is a faith-based school with a focus on academics. We love the culture of the school, the support of the community, and the camaraderie amongst the students. We love the spirit wear!

Keira really enjoyed playing “Sourwood Mountain” with the Middle School Orchestra. She raves about Chapel and being moved by the worship, the talent, and being in community with everyone.

Some of the activities we’ve participated in include: Keira joined the Middle School Kindness Club during advisory hour. Patricia volunteers any chance she can although limited due to the pandemic The last activity was with the PTF.  It was the post-it notes project!  Leaving encouraging notes for the middle and high schoolers to fill their hearts was such a great idea, so fun!

Everyone has been so welcoming and helpful to integrate us in, Even with the restrictions of the pandemic which have limited so much.

Manuel, Viviana, Adrian (6th), & Alexa (4th)

Education is the most important heritage for our children besides the Christian faith. They have always been attending private school. Their prior school did not offer Middle or High School. So it was time for a change when Adrian moved into 6th grade and we started looking for his preparation for college. The previous school was not a religious school. Therefore it was very important to us to find a school that would allow our children to freely express their beliefs in the Christian faith. That will not only encourage but will actively support their growth in the knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Another important criterion for us was a school that would offer opportunities like AP Program in High school. After evaluating a couple of options we decided on OCS.  We live in Oakland Township, so we were familiar with the school and we also have a couple of friends whose children attended OCS in the past and they recommended it to us.

We have felt welcomed from the beginning, the teachers and classmates have helped my kids to be integrated pretty quickly.  Even though we have had little interaction with other families so far due to the pandemic. They both enjoy chapel and are learning important fundamentals in the faith and also how to defend their beliefs when they will be challenged. Both children were in the ski club. Adrian participated in the Science & Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit representing OCS and he was awarded Second place for his project, "How Fast an Alka-Seltzer tablet Makes Gas?".  He was also nominated to participate in the 2021 Broadcom Masters Science Fair.

What’s unique about Oakland Christian School is the online education platform and more importantly, the ability as parents to be able to oversee their students’ progress without having to be in constant contact with the teachers.  This has been an extremely valuable tool for us this past year during the pandemic. And it will continue beyond this year. The teachers are always available when you need to speak to them.

The preparation to transition to online learning was solid. In Middle and Elementary school, online learning was not required this year, but we felt that the infrastructures were in place. And they were ready anytime when there is a quarantined situation, to make the switch seamlessly. Especially compared to last year when so many schools were scrambling to make online learning successful.

The school and Elementary communications keep us up to date with the school activities and how they have handled the pandemic. This has been very important to us.  Alexa's teacher, Mrs. Hosmer has been a great support to her and definitively helped her to quickly integrate into the classroom. She is truly a blessing. The teachers challenge them but also offer so much support and praise to our children.

Jesse, Amber, Cora (3rd), Sienna (Kindergarten), Mila & Brooks

Our family was drawn to OCS from its reputation in the community as being a school that teaches Biblical principles coupled with strong academics. We also felt very welcomed by the staff and current families that attended OCS to become a part of the school family. We knew our kids would thrive in a place like OCS and be shown and taught the Love of Christ in their classrooms while also being challenged academically.

Due to the current state of the country, we know it has been slightly different than past years to get involved and participate. However, we have been very thankful that the teachers have kept us informed on all the classroom activities and kept things fun and exciting for the kids! We look forward to being able to be more involved in person in the future. As a first-year family, we have only had close experiences with Mrs. Morga and Mrs. Ream. We have been blown away by how much they pour into our daughters and how they really focus on not just teaching them school work but also on developing their characters and encouraging them to make wise decisions and grow their relationships with the Lord. We are so happy with our decision to send our kids to OCS!

OCS is truly a one-of-a-kind place! From the frequent emails and devotionals encouraging the OCS families with scripture and prayer over our children to the teachers who continually update us as parents and pray over our students, I don't know of another school that strives to provide an excellent education along with instilling strong Biblical values all while making education so exciting and fun quite like OCS does.

Kevin & Madeline, Mason (12th Grade), Lucas (9th Grade), Colin (7th Grade)

We have been at OCS for 10 years. What initially drew us to OCS was first and foremost a school where our kids could talk about Jesus. We wanted them in a Christian environment where they would be challenged and grow closer to God. We can guide them at home, but kids are in school so many hours a day. We wanted them to be with Christian teachers and leaders who love them and help them to deepen their love for Jesus.  With 3 boys, sports is also a big priority. We love that OCS offers so many different programs. We have good competition and great coaches. We also knew that OCS offered really good academics.

Some activities my kids have been involved in include football, basketball, baseball, National Junior Honor Society, National Honor Society, Battle of the Books, and Strings. I (Madeline) have always loved being involved in my boys’ activities. I have been a room mom during the elementary years, have been a chaperone for many field trips, was involved with the PTF,  and have volunteered for many athletic events. I now work in the EEC as a preschool assistant. I have been there for 6 years, and still love seeing their little faces each day.  Kevin has been involved in coaching football, basketball, and baseball throughout the boys' years.

We have had so many good memories here at OCS. We would choose this school all over again if we had a second chance. We love the positive Christian atmosphere, and how the teachers genuinely care for our kids.  What is unique about OCS is that they teach the kids to embrace their faith and to live it out each day. Also, because it is a small school, we are able to really get to know the other families and develop some lifelong friendships.

Sebastian & Kris, Francesca (OCS 10’), Jack (Ocs 11'), Alexandra (OCS 12’), son-in-law Adam Exelby (OCS 12'), Isabella (OCS 15’), Victoria (OCS 17’), Antonina (OCS 19'), & Sophia (11 grade)

Before we get started, I don’t want you to view this like one of “those” family Christmas letters you dread reading. We have a lot of children.  :-)

Our children are uniquely designed by God.  With that being said, throughout the years our children have been involved in so many activities.  Athletics plays a large part for many of our children. Our son was involved in football, baseball, bowling, and golf.  The girls were involved in cross-country, track, bowling, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and cheerleading.  Cheerleading was out of their comfort zone but taught them how to use their voice and get in front of a crowd. We love that some of our children could achieve All-American, and All-State status while others were just happy to be a part of a team and grow as individuals.

Our children have also been involved in OCS mission trips to China, Costa Rica and Mexico. On those mission trips, they learned that some of the happiest people were the poorest people. One of our girls went on a Europe trip. That trip was an amazing cultural experience.  Our children have been involved with the National Honor Society, student council, peer tutoring,  LEAD, Band,  Side by Side, Home Economics club,  Eco Club, and book club. Furthermore, our children have developed beautiful relationships with some of the International students.

We became part of the OCS family back in 2007, we have always desired a Christian education for our children from preschool through college.  We want them to learn through the lens of the Word of God.  Years ago, our first meeting with Doc Johnson, we felt comfortable with the Christian and spiritual aspects of OCS as well as the high academic standards.  The students would gather, on their own, to have once a month student-led teaching and worship bonfires.

I’ve always dreamed of having a large family and being a part of each of my children’s lives.  I have been a team mom, field trip chaperone, volunteered at athletic events, PTF, substitute teaching, room mom, lunchroom mom, and transition committee, and continue to assist the elementary staff with projects.  I love laminating for the elementary, it’s free therapy.  The paper goes in plain and comes out shiny!

What’s unique about OCS is that we appreciate the multi-faceted Christian thinking from a diverse group of dominations and non-denominational church members. We love the spirit of the school.  OCS can balance high academics, “heart” work, spirituality, and have fun while doing it. The OCS student body has always embraced their peers for exactly how God created each individual regardless of their economic status, personal shortcomings or disabilities.

My advice to new families is to enjoy each and every opportunity to be involved in their children’s lives. They grow up quickly! You truly get what you put into it. Our family is still very connected with many OCS families from our initial years and enjoying the current families.

By Oakland Christian School

We joined OCS last Fall (2019), what initially drew us here is knowing that Christ is the center of everything done at Oakland Christian. We've been around OCS for over 15 years as I (Josh) have had students that attended there (youth pastor). I have spoken in chapels and coached basketball over the years, I’ve even officiated a few basketball games, too!

Our girls have participated in activities such as HS Choir, Resonance (worship team), basketball, softball - Kylie, 4-5th Grade basketball, Battle of the Books, and iLead5 - Sydney. Some of the favorite things I like to volunteer for keeping score at varsity girls' basketball games, admissions/concessions at games, coaching 5th-grade girls basketball and helping coaches wherever I can (basketball/would've been softball, too!).

What’s unique about OCS is Jesus - pretty simple.  We came from a public school and the difference is amazing. Our girls have deeper relationships with peers that share their beliefs and devotion to Jesus. They hadn't experienced that before...and it's invaluable.

For a new family coming to OCS...the biggest thing is to GET INVOLVED. Get to know some people. Spend time with teachers, coaches, and other families. It's a great place for our kids...and we are so thankful that God made it possible for us to be a part of OCS.

We love the OCS Family!  It does feel like a family. We are newer and still getting to know our new extended family, but we do feel welcomed. The teachers & staff really care for our kids. The way they pour into them not just academically, but to impact them for God's Kingdom is such a blessing.

Michael (1987 grad), Sarah (1988 grad), Kayla (2015 grad), Zachary (2017 grad), Seth (2020 grad), Micah (11th grade), Lydia (10th grade), Brand New Son-In-Law Zachary Bouren (2015 grad)

Mike began his OCS journey in 1983, I (Sarah) did in 1984, and our kids in 2008.  Mike and my parents both wanted a strong Christian education and sacrificed greatly to afford for us to go there.

My mom, Freddy Kemler, worked as the secondary admin for 25 years (retired in 2008) and it was always Mike and my dream to send the kids to OCS someday since the school had such an impact on our lives.  We too knew the sacrifice was big but were willing to give it and have never regretted the decision.

We love all the sporting activities the kids are involved in and go to all their games, Mike is the Varsity Softball coach and has coached Middle School baseball and basketball boys and girls. I am typically volunteering as the team mom for any of the sports the kids are playing and ran the Spiritwear booth for 8 years.  I am now serving on the committee to start the boosters club.  Some of the activities my children have participated in include:  Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Bowling, Baseball, Softball, Orchestra, Band, Student Council, NHS, and LEAD.

What’s unique about OCS is the closeness you have with other families.  They really are all family to us and have many VERY close relationships that started at OCS.  The teachers really do love our kids.  They want them to succeed and want to partner with the families to ensure they do succeed.  They are easy to talk to and go the extra mile. Since we are a sports-oriented family, we love the fact that our kids can participate in any sport.  In many large public schools, sports are very difficult to get involved in unless you have been playing it all your life and are a high-level player. The coaches pray with and for the kids and are more concerned with their character than their skill. Although we have top-notch coaches that really do know and love the game.

To new families, seek out someone who you can ask all those "silly questions". So many times we take for granted that those of us who have been around for a long time know things that new families do not. We would love to come alongside and help navigate with them.

To the teachers, in this uncertain time, know that we parents love and appreciate all you are doing and know it isn't easy how much you have had to change the way you are teaching.  We are continually praying that you receive an extra measure of patience and endurance.

We’re beginning our sixth year at OCS this Fall. What initially drew us to OCS is the Christian environment. Activities that our girls are involved in include: soccer, volleyball, softball, strings, Honor Society,  LEAD, and Geo Challenge.

Programs and activities around campus that we’ve loved volunteering are class field trips /activities, sports volunteer opportunities, and the SCRIP gift card program.

What’s unique about OCS is that the teachers display the love of Christ to their students. As the world is becoming a darker place, OCS seeks to walk with the Lord.

We began our OCS journey when Alaina was going into 3rd grade and Abby was in 1st. My (Lisa) dad was a public school teacher and I taught in the public schools for 8 years. I was grateful to share the love of Jesus in this ministry. However, as our children grew we became more and more concerned about these vital years.  Before we visited OCS for the first time, we prayed for clear signs to guide our decision and God was faithful to answer! From the moment we stepped in the door, we felt His peace and presence.  Many Spirit-led conversations and interactions with staff members made our decision clear. OCS was the place we wanted our children to be "trained up in His Word" so that when they leave this place they are fully prepared to step into the joys and challenges of adulthood!

Alaina is involved in varsity basketball and volleyball, National Junior Honor Society, and will begin serving as a member of the LEAD team this year. Abby participated in middle school volleyball, basketball, softball, and soccer. She is also part of the National Junior Honor Society, plays the violin in the orchestra, and will be joining the praise band this upcoming year as she enters high school.

Together, Brian and I served on the FOLK team for 3 years, planning events for families at OCS. Brian has truly enjoyed his time as the varsity girls' assistant coach and now as the head coach. He joyfully pours into these girls and their families, and reaps the benefits of growing spiritually every year!  I enjoyed volunteering for field trips and helping in the classroom during my elementary years and now enjoy supporting my husband and these amazing girls.  The biggest blessing has been being a part of the OCS prayer team since the first year we joined this OCS family! Nothing can compare to praying with other brothers and sisters in Christ and seeing God doing amazing things within His body of believers!

My advice to new families? Embrace this family as your own! You will never regret the time you've spent investing in your children's future!   Jesus is at the center of OCS... and for that, we are so very thankful! The staff and administrators truly care about every child and work hard to help them become the best version of who God created them to be!

Our children started at OCS 7 years ago, back in the Fall of 2013. We were looking for a faith-based program that also provided strong academics. Athletics were a large part of our decision- we wanted a place where our kids could play sports and have a large variety to choose from. Our kids have participated in football, basketball, baseball, soccer club, art club, and science club.

I love that our students can start in preschool together and travel all the way to graduation together. They really become like siblings who take care of and watch out for one another. This also allows the parents to bond and communicate with each other.

PTF and Lifebuilders are a huge part of my life here at OCS. I love to support our staff and show them how loved they are. Raising funds for the school to be able to provide even more programs and opportunities for students has been a blessing.

OCS has become our family. With all three kids there, being involved in volunteering, sports, and after-school activities, this school is a part of our everyday lives. Families take care of one another and love your kids as you love them. I know that if I need anything I can count on the staff or families for help. Our social life is really intertwined with OCS and we are so grateful for the friendships we have here. We can raise our kids and grow in our faith together.

We’ve been at OCS for 6 years for the kids (since 2014), and I (Jessie) am an OCS alum from the Class of 2000. Efraim plays basketball and was on the Elementary Robotics team. Ben is on the worship team. Hannah and Efraim are in the Spanish Immersion program.

God opens a way and easily leads you there. When we arrived back, it felt like we stumbled upon OCS but really it was God's kind hand guiding our path. He has many beautiful purposes in which he plants our feet.

One of my favorite things at OCS is praying with a few teachers Monday or Tuesday mornings every week before school on campus. What a foundation this laid to dedicate our weeks, and lift them up to the mighty God who would carry us and all our burdens throughout that week so faithfully. Covering the teachers and students (with the teachers) in prayer was always my favorite.  I also love volunteering at the used uniform sale!  It has always lightened my load and blessed me. I have always felt clothed and provided for through this sale, and God's hand has always been present in clothing us beautifully!

There are pathways around every corner to find Jesus! He is hidden in different aspects of the culture at OCS and I love the way we encounter him. I love the open spaces, teachers, mission trips, student prayer and Bible study, worship team, and endless other ways that Jesus meets the people of Oakland Christian, and they experience him in a new, personal, and intimate way.

I believe the best days of OCS are yet to come. There is a beautiful field there with ground to be worked on and foundation to be laid, so a more beautiful and diverse landscape can come up...a place where God's Spirit is comfortable to stay and abide, transforming the lives within into their God-given purposes and destinies so that no one leaves their gifts unused.  We love OCS!

We began our OCS journey in August of 2012 when our daughter, Taylor, started Kindergarten. We sought out OCS for Christian education. We stayed because the instruction is excellent. We have embraced the community at OCS, it is home. At OCS we can unapologetically declare our love for Jesus. We come together to worship and pray as a body. Our kids are taught to serve others and give all the glory to God.

Taylor is entering 8th grade in the fall of 2020. She plays the violin in the Middle School Orchestra. She plays Lancer Softball and Soccer. She is a member of the NJHS (National Junior Honor Society). Our son, Cameron, is entering 6th grade this fall. He plays Lancer Football, Basketball, and Baseball. He is also a member of the elementary Robotics team.

There are so many ways to engage in the community at OCS. Chris has served on the school board for many years, but he really enjoys his time in the booth announcing the Lancer elementary football games. Kristi enjoys helping the class with service days and field trips, but her favorite experience is creating the Fear Factor room for the Middle School Lock-In.

One of our favorite events at OCS is the Elementary Fall Fun Night. It is a great time to build relationships with other OCS families in an outdoor setting. We relax and enjoy chili on a cool fall night before heading through the trails to watch the Lancers bring home a football victory.
